The Blu-ray market share was 12% with a revenue of $18.94M for the week ending January 17th, according to Home Media Magazine.

While this seems kind of where we were ‘last year’, due to changes in the way market share is calculated, it is actually up a couple of points.

Revenue is up almost 80% over last year, which is a nice year over year rise.

I was a little surprised to see that the critically acclaimed The Hurt Locker took the top spot, ahead of the familiarly second placed Hangover from Warner.

District 9 from Sony Pictures, Inglourious Basterds from Universal and the Rob Zombie version of Halloween II

from Sony took the remaining slots in the top five.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs from Sony fell to 7th place, while Tyler Perry’s latest I Can Do Bad All By Myself from Lionsgate was 9th.

Television releases were represented by The Simpsons: The Complete Twentieth Season from Fox, featured in 17th place.

On the per title market share side, top selling DVD I Can Do Bad All By Myself had only 5% market share on Blu-ray Disc, while top selling Blu-ray The Hurt Locker took in 35% on Blu-ray Disc.

District 9 from Sony came close to even with 49% Blu-ray Disc market share and Star Trek from Paramount was close behind with 45%.

Looking at Television releases, The Simpsons: The Complete Twentieth Season had a healthy 22% on Blu-ray Disc while Glee: Season 1 Volume 1 – Road to Sectionals, also from Fox, sold no Blu-ray Discs since it was not released on the format.

Having popular titles with no Blu-ray release is one of the reasons I don’t expect to see a powerful growth in the overall market share for Blu-ray Disc.
